How to beat procrastination in today's distracting world

Procrastination is a habit in which you delay doing something either because of fear of failing, getting distracted or any other reason that is given by your own self. This will give you tips on how to handle procrastination while doing developer works or any other IT-related jobs.

Pomodoro

Focusing for a long period of time can seem daunting and is the reason why many people procrastinate. This timer will help you focus as it allocates 20 minutes for straight up working and focusing , with 5 minutes short breaks. There is also 15 minute breaks after several rounds of working. You can use the timer online at pomofocus.io

1 minute rule

1 minute rule means if you want to do something but feels hesitant doing it, you can try do it for just 1 minute to see how it goes. This concept takes advantage of the brain's reward system in which once you start doing a thing you will feel better because you are in the process of doing it rather than sitting around procrastinating and feeling bad because you haven't done it, therefore that feeling of relief will snowball into you doing the thing for more than 1 minute.

Routine

Let's say you have to finish writing a code to a program. You can build up a routine and link up habits as you do it. For example, if you have a habit of getting your breakfast at 9 am, you can tell yourself "Okay, every time I return from getting my breakfast, I will work 2 minutes for my code project". You have already linked up your breakfast habit with your coding work and make it into a routine. This way it will become more clear when you should do something rather than being overwhelmed on when to start the work to kill your procrastination.

Don't feel bad if you fail

Let's say you have been procrastinating for far too long and you feel bad about it. Don't stay in that cycle. Immediately count to 3 , get your pomodoro or try applying 1 minute rule , and do it. Just accept that you fail to do it before and move on. Feeling down because of your past mistakes will only get you so far. There is always room for improvement. So go ahead and do it!
